hahaha - just kidding. This is a welcome note from you just to get me thinking about how one even approaches learning and the different scholarship modalities. Your industry and enthusiasm is unique and inspirational. No shit, it really is, James. I'm definitely going to get Adler's Syntopicon. Is he on Substack? ;)
Sadly Adler passed away. The Syntopicon is volumes 2 and 3 of The Great Books of the Western World by Encyclopedia Britannica (originally published in the 40s). Adler was one of the editors of the series, and the driving force behind it. He, and others like former University of Chicago president Robert Hutchins, were the main catalysts of the great books learning movement of the mid to late 20th century. The story of these guys lives, and the efforts they made to return Western education to it's foundational liberal arts tradition (with an emphasis on the Western cannon) is boundlessly inspiring. We need to revive the great vision these amazing men had!
Deeply researched articles are appreciated! I'd need several lifetimes to deeply research all the things I'm interested in. Thank you for sharing what you learn with us.
I want my money back!
